MBDA Begins Low-Rate Production of Spear Missile at Farnborough 2026
MBDA has announced the commencement of low-rate production for its Spear turbojet-powered mini-cruise missile, known as Selective Precision Effects At Range (SPEAR 3), at the Farnborough International Airshow 2026. The missile, designed for use by the UK's F-35B Lightning II and for export, features GPS/inertial mid-course navigation, a two-way datalink, and a dual-mode seeker for terminal homing. It is intended to target mobile or challenging static targets with a range of 100 km. The production follows a successful trial where a US Marine Corps F-35B, flown by UK pilots, carried four Spear missiles. MBDA aims to have the missile certified for integration onto the UK's F-35Bs by the end of 2026.
