Congo Initiates First Lithium Exports to China, Highlighting Global Resource Dynamics
The Democratic Republic of Congo has commenced its first-ever lithium exports to China, marking a significant milestone in the global lithium market. The exports are part of the Manono project, a joint venture primarily owned by China's Zijin Mining Group. The shipments began in June 2026, following the completion of the project's processing plant in May 2026. This development positions Chinese mining firms as dominant players in the Congolese mining sector, where they already have substantial operations. The Manono project is recognized as one of the world's largest undeveloped hard-rock lithium resources, and its development has been contentious due to previous license revocations.
