Telefónica Germany Tests Satellite-Based Mobile Services in Rural Areas
Telefónica Germany is conducting tests on a new satellite-based mobile service in the rural region of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. This initiative, in collaboration with Luxembourg-based OQ Technology, aims to provide direct-to-device mobile texting and voice messaging using low-Earth orbit satellites. The service is designed to supplement existing terrestrial mobile networks, particularly in areas where expanding ground-based infrastructure is not feasible. OQ Technology, known for its IoT connectivity solutions, is pioneering this approach in Europe with its LEO constellation dedicated to direct-to-device services. The test represents a significant step in addressing connectivity challenges in remote areas.
