U.S. Representative Lori Trahan Faces Protests Over AI Frontier Act's State Preemption Clause
U.S. Representative Lori Trahan, a Democrat, has introduced the bipartisan Frontier Act, aimed at establishing a risk-based framework for regulating the artificial intelligence (AI) industry. The bill proposes tiered requirements for frontier AI developers, including model cards, risk-management frameworks, independent audits, incident reporting, and ongoing assessments. However, a small group of protesters, including UMass Lowell College Democrats President Matthew Kelly, delivered a petition with over 4,000 signatures to Trahan’s office, opposing a section of the bill they interpret as preempting states and municipalities from creating their own AI regulations.
