Europe Unprepared for Extreme Heat Despite Rising Temperatures and Climate Challenges
Europe is facing increasing challenges from extreme heat, with recent heatwaves breaking temperature records in the UK and Ireland. Despite the growing threat, many European countries lack comprehensive heat-health action plans. A survey in 2024 revealed that only 21 out of 38 countries had such plans in place. The situation is exacerbated by the ongoing climate crisis, which has intensified heatwaves, making them longer and more deadly. Efforts to mitigate the impact, such as turning car parks into green spaces, are still considered radical in many areas. However, some cities have begun implementing climate shelters to provide refuge during extreme heat events.
