Family Adopts Multigenerational Living to Manage High Long-Term Care Costs
Teri Carlyle, a 58-year-old resident of Vallejo, California, has adopted a multigenerational living arrangement with her sister and father to manage the high costs of long-term care. After her father suffered a stroke in 2021, he began experiencing mobility issues, necessitating a wheelchair. Carlyle's mother, who was initially the primary caregiver, unexpectedly passed away in 2023 due to a heart condition. This prompted Carlyle and her sister to take on the responsibility of caring for their father. The family incurs over $4,000 monthly in caregiving expenses, including hiring caregivers and a personal trainer for her father. To offset these costs, Carlyle has rented out her parents' house and is considering additional revenue streams, such as renting out her or her sister's home.
