Aberdeen City Council Implements Policy to Phase Out Strip Clubs
Aberdeen City Council's licensing committee has approved a new policy that will effectively phase out strip clubs in the city. The decision introduces a 'presumption against' granting new licenses for sexual entertainment venues, including those that would replace existing establishments if they close. While the city's five current strip clubs can continue to operate and renew their licenses, the policy aims to gradually reduce their number to zero over time. This move follows a similar attempt in Edinburgh in 2023, which was overturned after a legal challenge. The Aberdeen City Council stated that the decision was made after careful consideration of public safety, balancing individual freedoms with the health and well-being of staff and patrons. However, some club owners, like Tony Cochrane, who owns two strip clubs in Aberdeen, have criticized the decision, claiming a lack of consultation and potential harm to workers.
