Washington Clean Energy Testbeds Opens West Coast's First Public Pilot-Scale Battery Manufacturing Lab in Seattle
The Washington Clean Energy Testbeds in Seattle has launched the West Coast's first public, open-access lab for pilot-scale battery manufacturing. This new facility allows industry users and academic researchers to produce prototype pouch cells, a versatile battery format used in consumer electronics and electric transportation, on a pay-per-use basis. The lab supports the development of both lithium-ion components and new battery chemistries that aim for faster charging, higher energy density, and the use of abundant, environmentally friendly materials. This initiative is designed to bridge the gap between laboratory research and commercial battery manufacturing, providing innovators with the necessary infrastructure to validate their products in realistic cell configurations. The 1,600-square-foot expansion for batteries was funded by a $7.5 million capital investment from Washington state through the Climate Commitment Act.
