Indian-Origin Woman Jailed in UK for COVID Loan Fraud Impacting Business Integrity
Rupali Wagh, an Indian-origin woman, has been sentenced to over two years in prison by the Merthyr Tydfil Crown Court in Wales for fraudulently securing more than £216,000 in government-backed COVID-19 loans. Wagh admitted to five counts of fraud related to the UK's Bounce Back Loan Scheme, which was designed to help businesses survive the pandemic. She exaggerated the turnover of her companies to obtain loans and used the funds for personal expenses, including paying off debts and investing in stocks. Investigators found that she submitted false turnover figures for four businesses between May and September 2020, and in some cases, obtained duplicate loans for the same company. The Insolvency Service reported that Wagh transferred large sums into her personal account, using them for personal finance and investments, rather than supporting her businesses.
