AI Chatbots Outperform Search Engines in Debunking Foreign Propaganda, Study Finds
An experiment conducted by NPR and NewsGuard revealed that popular AI chatbots are more effective than traditional search engines in countering false narratives spread by foreign states. While concerns have been raised about AI's potential to disseminate propaganda, the study found that chatbots correctly debunked false narratives approximately three-quarters of the time. In contrast, AI summaries often found at the top of search engine results did not perform as well, though they still challenged falsehoods a majority of the time. The experiment involved posing 30 questions based on false narratives from China, Iran, and Russia to various AI chatbots, including OpenAI's ChatGPT and Google's Gemini, as well as major search engines. Experts emphasize the continued importance of verifying information with primary sources, despite AI's improved performance.
