Jonah Goldberg Critiques Political Campaigns' 'Affordability' Promises as Unrealistic
Jonah Goldberg, editor-in-chief of The Dispatch, argues that the widespread political focus on 'affordability' by both Democratic and Republican leaders is a simplistic and ultimately undeliverable promise. He highlights the case of New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani, a democratic socialist who campaigned and won on an 'affordability' platform in 2025. Mamdani's initial actions included a partial rent freeze on a significant portion of NYC's rental stock, which Goldberg suggests will lead to long-term housing unaffordability. More recently, Mamdani endorsed a plan requiring Amazon and other companies to cease using third-party contractors for deliveries, a move seen as a concession to the Teamsters. Goldberg points out that this plan, if enacted, would likely increase delivery costs and slow services, contradicting the very notion of affordability. He notes that the Mamdani administration did not study the affordability impact of this plan, despite its stated focus on the issue.
