Mindfulness Techniques Aid in Addiction Recovery by Addressing Ritualized Behaviors
Mindfulness, a technique increasingly integrated into addiction treatment, is proving effective in helping individuals understand and disrupt their addiction rituals. These rituals, often unconscious, involve specific times, locations, and tools associated with substance use, and can be as significant as the substance itself. Don Sheeley, a facilitator with SMART Recovery, highlights that mindfulness brings these automatic behaviors to conscious awareness, allowing individuals to recognize their choices and the underlying emotions driving them, such as stress, tension, anxiety, or fear. By focusing on the present moment and observing thoughts and feelings without immediate reaction, mindfulness creates a pause between an urge and an action, enabling more deliberate decision-making and reducing the likelihood of relapse. Research, including a 2014 study in JAMA Psychiatry, indicates that mindfulness-based interventions significantly reduce relapse risk compared to traditional methods.
