New Boat Enhances Women's Pearl Farming in Fiji, Boosting Climate-Resilient Livelihoods
Women in Najia Village on Viwa Island, Fiji, have received a new boat to support their pearl farming business, as part of the Pasifika WE GUARDIANS project. This initiative, led by Alinea International and funded by the Government of Canada through Global Affairs Canada, aims to strengthen climate-resilient livelihoods. The boat is expected to improve safety and efficiency for the women managing their pearl oyster farms, facilitating market access and enterprise expansion. The Ministry of Fisheries has provided technical support, confirming the suitability of Viwa's seawater for pearl farming due to its stable salinity levels. This project marks the first time the village has received such support, promising to create new income opportunities and encourage people to return home.
