Microbursts Cause Severe Damage in Northwest DC, Drawing Derecho Comparisons
A powerful storm swept through northwest Washington, DC, on Tuesday evening, causing significant damage and power outages. The National Weather Service reported that microbursts, intense downdrafts from thunderstorms, were likely responsible for the destruction, with wind gusts estimated at 60-70 mph. The storm toppled trees, utility lines, and even the roof of a gas station. Over 30,000 customers lost power, and the storm's intensity drew comparisons to the 2012 derecho, though its impact was more localized. Additional damage was reported in Montgomery County, Maryland, and other areas in the region experienced heavy rainfall, with Baltimore receiving 2-4 inches in a short period. Tornado warnings were issued in parts of Maryland, and confirmed tornadoes were reported in Trappe, MD, and near Newport News, VA.
