West Virginia's Incentive Program for Remote Workers Boosts Local Economy
West Virginia has implemented a program called Ascend West Virginia, designed to attract remote workers to the state by offering financial incentives. Launched in 2021, the program aims to counteract the state's declining population and economic challenges by bringing in new residents who can work remotely. Participants receive $12,000 over two years, along with access to coworking spaces and outdoor recreational opportunities. The initiative has attracted over 700 participants, contributing significantly to the local economy. The program is part of a broader trend across the U.S., where states like Indiana, Kansas, and Kentucky offer similar incentives to boost local economies by attracting remote workers.
