Bernie Sanders Advocates for International AI Regulation Amidst Concerns of Unchecked Growth
U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders has called for international cooperation to regulate artificial intelligence (AI) during a panel discussion on Capitol Hill. The event, which included two leading Chinese scientists, highlighted the rapid advancements in AI technology by startups and tech giants in Silicon Valley and Beijing. Sanders, known for his skepticism towards AI, emphasized the potential risks associated with its widespread use, such as misinformation, data privacy issues, and social isolation. He warned of a future where automation could lead to significant unemployment if not properly managed. Sanders proposed an international treaty akin to the Cold War-era nuclear pact to ensure AI safety. The panel's inclusion of Chinese academics drew criticism from some conservatives, who questioned the trustworthiness of the Chinese government in such discussions.
