Lawmakers and Paris Hilton Advocate for DEFIANCE Act to Combat AI-Generated Deepfakes
A bipartisan group of U.S. lawmakers, alongside celebrity Paris Hilton, is advocating for the DEFIANCE Act, a legislative measure aimed at addressing the issue of AI-generated deepfakes. Introduced by Democratic Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in May 2025, the Disrupt Explicit Forged Images and Non-Consensual Edits (DEFIANCE) Act seeks to provide a federal civil remedy for victims of nonconsensual sexually explicit deepfakes. The bill allows victims to sue creators and distributors of such content, with potential damages up to $250,000 in cases related to sexual assault, stalking, or harassment. Despite its introduction and bipartisan support, the bill has not yet been brought to the House floor for a vote. The Senate passed its version of the legislation unanimously in January 2026.
