50-Foot Catamaran 'Blue Zephyr' Successfully Transported to South Lake Tahoe via Highway 50
The 'Blue Zephyr,' a 50-foot catamaran, has successfully completed its journey from Richmond to South Lake Tahoe, navigating the challenging Highway 50. The transportation, described as a 'super load' by Dan Wiley of DTS Pilot Car Service, required extensive planning and specialized equipment, including a trailer designed to tilt for clearance. The journey, which began last weekend, encountered several obstacles, including a fire on Interstate 580 and unexpected construction in Placerville. The crew meticulously navigated tight clearances on Highway 50, with some sections leaving only two to four inches of space, requiring personnel to walk alongside the vessel to ensure safe passage. Despite the slow pace and challenges, the catamaran arrived in South Lake Tahoe faster than anticipated, untouched and ready for its new home. Sail Tahoe Blue, the company behind the catamaran, plans an open house and aims to begin chartering trips by the end of the month.
