South Carolina Lawmakers Establish New Committees to Address AI Regulation

South Carolina lawmakers in both the House and Senate have formed special committees to analyze artificial intelligence (AI). These committees aim to understand the risks and potential benefits of AI, as well as to establish regulatory guardrails. This move comes as states nationwide are grappling with how to regulate AI, with some leaders in the AI field expressing concerns about the rapid pace of its evolution. South Carolina is among at least 17 states that currently lack a policy definition for AI, a foundational step that 33 other states have already taken. Lawmakers, including Aiken Republican Sen. Tom Young, chair of the Senate's special AI committee, plan to hold hearings into next summer to develop policies for AI use within state government. State Sen. Matt Leber, R-Charleston, emphasized the need for the state to be proactive in addressing AI before potential issues arise. Several AI-related legislative proposals have been introduced at the Statehouse, though few have been enacted into law.

Lakewood, Ohio, is undergoing significant urban development, spearheaded by CASTO’s $119 million Lakewood Common project on the former Lakewood Hospital site. Beyond residential and commercial growth, Lakewood is investing $8 million in renovations for the Winterhurst Ice Arena and undertaking two major infrastructure projects: a $21.6 million upgrade to Bunts Road’s water, storm drain, and sewer mains, and the construction of the $11 million Lake-Clifton Connector, a 1.2-mile pedestrian and cycling path.

The Goleta City Council has reviewed the operation plan for the new Goleta Train Depot, which is expected to be largely self-service and open seven days a week, year-round. It will be Goleta’s first city-operated and maintained train station, open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily, except on city-recognized holidays. There will be no direct service by Amtrak personnel or permanent staff; instead, the station will be monitored via video surveillance and a third-party day porter. Passengers will manage their tickets online and check schedules on electronic boards.
