Icelandic Towns Expand Leisure Funding for Senior Citizens
The town of Akureyri in Iceland is set to introduce a leisure grant scheme aimed at encouraging older residents to participate in organized leisure and fitness activities. This initiative reflects a growing trend across Icelandic municipalities, with similar schemes already in place in Reykjanesbær, Hafnarfjörður, Mosfellsbær, and Vogar. The National Association of Senior Citizens has welcomed the expansion of such schemes, noting that they promote wellbeing and active lifestyles among senior citizens. The association's chair, Björn Snæbjörnsson, emphasized the importance of these initiatives in encouraging exercise and leisure activities, which can have positive effects on health and reduce pressure on healthcare services.
