Frankfurt Airport Malaria Outbreak Leads to Third Death and Eight Infections
A highly unusual cluster of locally acquired malaria infections around Frankfurt Airport has resulted in a third death and an additional infection, bringing the total to eight cases. German health authorities confirmed the latest fatality and infection. The two newly reported patients resided in the Schwanheim district near Frankfurt Airport and had no history of travel to malaria-endemic countries or employment at the airport. Officials suspect these individuals were infected by mosquitoes inadvertently transported into Germany via aircraft. This follows six earlier infections identified among Frankfurt Airport employees in late August, two of whom also died. While no new cases have been reported since the beginning of the week, surveillance remains crucial due to the exceptional nature of this outbreak. Malaria is extremely rare in Germany, which can lead to diagnostic delays if physicians do not initially consider the disease in patients without a travel history.
