Trump Administration Subpoenas Journalist in Leak Investigation Targeting North Korea Story
The Trump administration has issued a subpoena to Matthew Cole, a freelance journalist who contributed to a New York Times article about a failed 2019 secret U.S. mission in North Korea. This action is part of the administration's ongoing efforts to identify leakers within the government. The subpoena, served in February, seeks Cole's testimony regarding his sources for the article, which detailed a classified operation involving U.S. Navy SEALs. The New York Times is providing legal support for Cole, with attorney David A. O’Neil representing him. O’Neil has stated that Cole is committed to defending press freedom and the First Amendment. This case follows a similar incident where the administration subpoenaed Times journalists over a story about security concerns with Air Force One, although those subpoenas were later withdrawn.
