The Leonid meteor shower, which occurred on November 12 and 13, 1833, had a significant cultural impact on Alabama. This astronomical event was so striking that it inspired songs, books, and movies. Jazz legends Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong helped popularize a song about the event. From 2002 to 2008, Alabama license plates featured the slogan 'Stars Fell On,' a nod to this historical event, replacing the previous slogan 'Heart of Dixie.' The meteor shower has become a nostalgic symbol for the state, reflecting its rich cultural history.
