Rowan Act Expands Amber Alert Criteria in Michigan Following Tragic Child Abduction
Governor Gretchen Whitmer is set to sign the Rowan Act into law, expanding the criteria for issuing Amber Alerts in Michigan. The legislation is named after Rowan Morey, a six-year-old boy who was abducted and killed by his father during a custody dispute. The act was championed by Rowan's mother, Brandi Morey-Pols, after her request for an Amber Alert was denied due to existing criteria. The new law allows for greater flexibility in issuing alerts, particularly in cases involving children with special needs, and provides liability protections for broadcasters. It also establishes a fund to support the Amber Alert system.
