Meta Increases Censorship of Political Content on Instagram Amid Government Pressure
Meta, the parent company of Instagram, has intensified its censorship of political and protest-related content on its platform in India. This move follows discussions between Meta's leadership and the Indian government, which has expressed concerns over the spread of anti-establishment content on social media. Posts from political figures and parties, including the Indian Youth Congress and Aam Aadmi Party, have been removed or restricted. The censorship is reportedly being enforced through the IT Rules, 2021, which allow for content takedown. Critics, including CJP spokesperson Saurav Das, argue that this action undermines free speech and public interest. Meta has not commented on the situation, but the company is known to comply with government requests for content removal under Section 79(3)(b) of the IT Act, 2000.
