President Trump Commutes Sentence of Former Labor Leader John Dougherty
Former Philadelphia labor leader John Dougherty, widely known as Johnny Doc, has been released from federal prison after President Trump commuted the remainder of his six-year sentence. Dougherty had served less than two years of his term, which stemmed from convictions in two high-profile trials. The first conviction involved bribing former Philadelphia City Councilmember Bobby Henon, and the second concerned an embezzlement scheme that defrauded his union of nearly $600,000. Dougherty's lawyer, George Bochetto, confirmed his release and stated that the decision was a 'magnificent gesture of compassion,' citing Dougherty's need to care for his gravely ill wife. U.S. District Judge Jeffrey L. Schmehl had previously denied Dougherty's requests for house arrest on similar grounds.
