Scientists Urge Action Against Illegal Sawfish Teeth Trade in Latin America
A recent study has highlighted the ongoing illegal trade of sawfish teeth in Latin America, where they are used as spurs in cockfighting despite bans. Researchers found that sawfish teeth, which can sell for $25 to $400 per pair, are sourced from countries like Peru, Ecuador, Costa Rica, Brazil, and Colombia, with Peru being the largest consumer. The trade persists despite international protections under CITES, which prohibits commercial trade of sawfish. The study calls for stricter enforcement of existing laws and better coordination among countries to curb this illicit trade.
