Olympian Jenny Simpson Suffers Cardiac Event, Diagnosed with Rare Heart Condition
Three-time Olympian Jenny Simpson, 39, experienced a sudden cardiac event in June while helping a group of girls during a mile-long run in Raleigh, North Carolina. She collapsed and does not recall the incident. Bystanders, including Ivy and Joey Pointer, CEO of Fleet Feet where Simpson works as chief running officer, performed CPR until first responders arrived. Simpson suffered a second cardiac arrest and was transferred to Duke University Medical Center, where she spent days on life support. She was subsequently diagnosed with arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy, a rare congenital heart condition where damaged heart tissue does not properly conduct electricity in the right ventricle. This condition means she will no longer be able to run.
