COVID-19's Impact on White Blood Cell Production and Immune System
Recent studies have highlighted the impact of COVID-19 on the production of white blood cells, a condition known as leukopenia. The virus can disrupt the bone marrow's ability to produce these cells or cause them to be rapidly deployed to infected areas, resulting in a temporary decrease in white blood cell count. This phenomenon is not unique to COVID-19; other viral infections such as hepatitis, Epstein-Barr virus, and HIV can similarly affect white blood cell production. The condition can lead to symptoms like persistent fevers, unexplained bruising, and unusual fatigue, indicating a weakened immune system.
