Blue Island Officials Consider Data Center Proposal Amid Community Concerns
The city of Blue Island is evaluating a proposal to convert the former MetroSouth Medical Center into a data center. Builders Capital, the new owner of the property, plans to demolish the existing structure and build a data center, pending approval of a special-use permit. City Administrator Thomas Wogan stated that the proposal will undergo a thorough review process involving public hearings and assessments by the Planning and Zoning Board and City Council. The proposal has sparked concerns among residents and city officials regarding environmental impacts, resource consumption, and the potential loss of community engagement previously provided by the hospital. The hospital was a significant employer and community hub before its closure in 2019.
