Idaho to Host New Nuclear Campus, Accept Spent Nuclear Fuel
Idaho has been selected as one of the potential host sites for the U.S. Department of Energy's new Nuclear Lifecycle Innovation Campuses. This initiative aims to boost manufacturing, create jobs, and promote American energy independence. However, hosting the campus requires Idaho to accept spent nuclear fuel and high-level radioactive waste from other states. This decision necessitates amending the 1995 nuclear settlement agreement, known as the 'Batt Agreement,' which previously limited nuclear waste shipments into Idaho. The state government, led by Governor Brad Little, has expressed support for the project, emphasizing its potential economic benefits.
