NASA's Rescue Mission Faces Setback as Spacecraft Spins Out of Control
NASA's mission to stabilize the Swift Observatory has encountered significant challenges. The Katalyst's LINK spacecraft, launched to boost the Swift Observatory into a stable orbit, is experiencing severe technical difficulties. According to a NASA blog post, the spacecraft's attitude control system has failed, causing it to spin uncontrollably and resulting in sporadic communications. The failure of two out of three reaction wheels, which are crucial for precise movements, has exacerbated the situation. Additionally, issues with the cold gas thruster system are further complicating the spacecraft's maneuverability. The Katalyst team is actively working to regain control of the spacecraft to complete the mission. If unsuccessful, the Swift Observatory's orbit will continue to decay, potentially leading to its fall to Earth, which would be a significant loss for scientific research.
