Cook Islands Advocates for Comprehensive Global Plastics Treaty to Address Pollution Burden
The Cook Islands has taken a leading role in the negotiations for a Global Plastics Treaty, emphasizing the need for the treaty to address the full lifecycle of plastics. During a meeting at the United Nations Environment Programme in Nairobi, the Cook Islands delegation, led by Halatoa Fua, highlighted the disproportionate impact of plastic pollution on Pacific Small Island Developing States. The delegation advocated for practical, science-based solutions that consider the unique challenges faced by these regions. The meeting aimed to consolidate political discussions and prepare for the upcoming session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee, which seeks to finalize a legally binding treaty to combat plastic pollution.
