WTO Reports Resilient Global Trade Growth Amid Iran Conflict and AI Boom
The World Trade Organization (WTO) has reported a 1.9% growth in global merchandise trade for the first quarter of 2026, compared to the previous period, and a 3.2% increase compared to the same quarter in 2025. This growth has been attributed to a surge in trade of electronic components related to the ongoing AI boom, which has offset the negative impacts of the Iran war. The conflict in the Middle East has led to significant disruptions, particularly in the Strait of Hormuz, affecting shipping and trade flows. Despite these challenges, the WTO notes that AI-related investments have bolstered trade volumes, especially in Asia and North America.
