Chinese Internet Claims Tang Dynasty Never Existed, Challenging Historical Authority
A peculiar phenomenon has emerged on the Chinese internet, where a segment of users is asserting that the Tang Dynasty, a prominent period in Chinese history from 618 AD to 907 AD, never actually existed. This claim reportedly originated from a history influencer named Qiao Yu, who, in May, used astrological data in a video to 'prove' the non-existence of the Tang Dynasty. The outlandish assertion has since gained significant traction, with reports indicating that individuals have contacted the tourism bureau in Xi'an, the former Tang capital, demanding its closure due to the alleged hoax. The hashtag 'the Tang dynasty doesn’t exist' has garnered tens of millions of views on Weibo, China's equivalent of X. This movement poses a challenge to the established historical narrative, which is a sensitive topic for the ruling Communist Party, known for its strict control over historical discourse.
