Representative Jeff Crank Introduces Bill to Reclassify Student Loan Debt for First-Time Homebuyers
Representative Jeff Crank (CO-05) has introduced H.R. 10084, known as the First Time Homebuyer Debt Reduction Act. This bill aims to address the significant hurdle student loan debt poses to homeownership for many Americans. The legislation proposes allowing home sellers to contribute up to $25,000 towards a buyer's federal student loan debt. Crucially, the bill instructs the Director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency to require Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to classify these payments as a financial concession, rather than a sales concession.
