Oregon Initiative to Ban Animal Killing Fails to Make November Ballot Due to Insufficient Signatures
An initiative in Oregon, known as Initiative Petition 28, aimed at banning most forms of animal killing, including hunting, fishing, and livestock farming, will not appear on the November ballot. The initiative, led by vegan advocates, failed to gather the required number of valid signatures. Although 142,784 signatures were submitted, only 104,262 were verified as valid by the Oregon Secretary of State’s Office, falling short of the 117,173 needed. The initiative faced significant opposition from political leaders, the farming and fishing industries, and Oregon's federally recognized tribes, who argued it would infringe on treaty-protected rights. This marks the third attempt by animal rights advocates to pass such a measure, with none of the 88 proposed initiatives in Oregon this year meeting the signature threshold.
