Open-Source Atari TOS Ported to Sega Mega CD, Expanding Classic Console Capabilities
An open-source replacement for Atari's TOS operating system, EmuTOS, has been successfully ported to the Sega Mega CD. This development allows a classic 16-bit console, originally from a different computing camp, to run an operating system typically associated with Atari machines. The project, led by [1d4r3k], demonstrates the ongoing effort to adapt familiar operating systems to older hardware. While not the original TOS, EmuTOS provides similar functionalities, including support for a serial keyboard, a printer, sound, and the ability to mount various storage devices like CDs, cartridges, RAMdisks, and internal backup RAM. There are also indications of work being done to port GEOS, another historical operating system, to the platform, which could further expand the software suite available for the modified Sega Mega CD.
