Heavy Rain Causes Millions of Gallons of Sewage Overflow in Connecticut River
Heavy rainfall in Springfield, MA, has led to the discharge of tens of millions of gallons of combined sewage and stormwater into the Connecticut River. The Springfield Water and Sewer Commission reported that Combined Sewer Overflows (CSOs) are activated during such events to prevent urban flooding and sewage backups. On Wednesday, July 29, 2026, approximately 4,350,000 gallons of overflow were released at the Bondi’s Island location, equivalent to about 6.5 Olympic-sized swimming pools. Similar overflows were reported upstream in Holyoke, MA, as the region's aging infrastructure struggled to handle the intense precipitation. Efforts to reduce CSO discharges have been ongoing, with Springfield achieving a 50% reduction since 1990 through infrastructure investments.
