Fisk University's Data Center Plan Sparks Community Concerns Over Potential Risks
Fisk University, a historically Black institution in Nashville, is planning to develop a $900 million master plan called Quantum Leap, which includes a 100,000-square-foot technology and innovation center. This center will house a high-powered data center aimed at enhancing the university's curriculum and research capabilities. The initiative is part of a broader effort to secure financial stability for the university, which has faced financial struggles and accreditation challenges. However, the project has sparked controversy, with critics arguing that the proliferation of data centers often negatively impacts marginalized communities. An online petition opposing the project has gathered nearly 18,000 signatures, citing concerns about health impacts and historical patterns of harmful infrastructure development in Black and working-class neighborhoods.
