El Niño and Global Warming Could Make 2026 a Record-Breaking Year

However, scientists like Zeke Hausfather and James Hansen suggest these odds may increase as El Niño strengthens. This natural phenomenon, combined with greenhouse gas emissions, is releasing unprecedented heat from the oceans, which are currently at record-high temperatures. Wildfires are raging across North America and Europe, while deadly heatwaves are suffocating cities worldwide. Marine heatwaves are affecting 82% of the world's ocean surface, and the impacts of El Niño are expected to intensify global temperature anomalies in the coming months.
