California State University Faces Mixed Reactions to $17-Million AI Initiative
California State University (CSU) has invested $17 million in a deal to provide ChatGPT, an AI tool, across its campuses. This initiative has sparked mixed reactions among students, faculty, and staff. A recent survey conducted by San Diego State University researchers revealed that while AI is widely used, there is significant distrust of AI-generated content and concerns about job security. The survey, which included 94,000 participants from 22 CSU campuses, found that personal use of AI is more common than educational use. Despite these concerns, many respondents expressed a desire for more formal training in AI, viewing it as essential for their professions. CSU Chancellor Mildred García sees the survey results as a call to action for the university to lead in integrating AI responsibly in higher education.
