LGBTQ+ Advocates Launch Initiative to Increase Representation in D.C. Neighborhood Commissions
In Washington, D.C., the Capital Stonewall Democrats have initiated a program called Queering ANCs to increase LGBTQ+ representation in the city's Advisory Neighborhood Commissions (ANCs). This digital program aims to recruit, train, and support LGBTQ+ individuals and allies to run for these local government positions. The initiative is a response to the underrepresentation of LGBTQ+ individuals in local government, despite D.C. having the highest proportion of LGBTQ+ adults in the U.S. The program provides resources such as a readiness quiz, training modules, and safety guidance to encourage participation. The goal is to fill vacant seats and ensure that LGBTQ+ voices are included in local decision-making processes.
