Rehoboth Beach Elects First Openly Gay and Female Mayor, Susan Stewart
Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, has elected Susan Stewart as its new mayor. Stewart secured over 60% of the vote among four mayoral candidates, marking a significant moment as she becomes the first openly gay mayor and the first woman to hold the position in decades for the coastal town. Her victory comes just one year after she was elected to the city’s Board of Commissioners. Stewart, an attorney with a background in financial services, moved to Rehoboth Beach full-time during the COVID-19 pandemic after owning a vacation home there since 2013. Her campaign focused on preserving the city's unique charm, which she describes as encompassing its historic buildings, outdoor spaces, the beach, and local traditions. She also aims to streamline city government operations, allowing the governing body to focus on strategy and vision while professionals execute those plans. Stewart will be sworn into office on September 18.
