Maryland Implements August Fishing Ban to Protect Striped Bass
Maryland has instituted a ban on striped bass fishing in the Chesapeake Bay for the month of August. This measure aims to protect the younger, resident population of striped bass from heat stress, which is exacerbated by high water temperatures and low dissolved oxygen levels during late summer. The ban, part of a management strategy since 2020, seeks to allow these fish to grow and eventually join the spawning stock. The decision aligns with efforts to address poor spawning success rates and is compliant with the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission regulations.
