Grayson-Funded Research Advances Cryotherapy for Laminitis Prevention in Horses
Recent research funded by the Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation has highlighted the effectiveness of cryotherapy in preventing laminitis in horses. Laminitis is a severe condition affecting the hoof, often leading to significant pain and potential death. The study, led by Dr. Andrew Van Eps and his team, demonstrates that cooling the lower limbs of horses can significantly reduce the risk of laminitis, particularly in high-risk horses. This method, known as therapeutic foot cooling, has shown promise in both preventing the onset of laminitis and improving outcomes when applied early in the disease's progression. The research has been applied successfully to several high-profile Thoroughbreds, including Lady Eli and Bal a Bali, who returned to racing post-treatment.
