Monster Waves Hit Southern California, Prompting Beach Warnings
A powerful south swell has brought some of the largest summer waves in years to Southern California, with the National Weather Service (NWS) issuing a Beach Hazard Statement through Thursday afternoon. Orange County is experiencing the most significant impact, with waves forecasted between 8 and 10 feet in many areas and reaching up to 15 feet in some locations. At Newport Beach's iconic Wedge, waves could climb to 20 feet due to the unique interaction of incoming and reflected swells. Coastal flooding has also been reported, with high tides peaking at 5.3 feet on Wednesday evening and 5.8 feet on Thursday evening. Lifeguards have increased staffing, and sand berms have been constructed in Newport Beach to protect homes. Dangerous ocean conditions, including rip currents and waves overtopping jetties, have been observed across the region.
