Arctial Aluminum Plant in Finland Aims for 2029 Production Amid European Supply Challenges
The Arctial aluminum smelter in Finland, backed by Rio Tinto, is targeting its first production of hot metal in the second half of 2029. This project, pending a final investment decision in 2027, aims to produce 610,000 metric tons of aluminum annually, potentially increasing European production by 20%. The project gains significance as the ongoing conflict in the Middle East has disrupted aluminum supplies, leading to increased premiums in Europe. The smelter would be the first major aluminum development in continental Europe in over 30 years, addressing some of the import needs exacerbated by reduced exports from the Gulf region.
