Scientists Discover Fungi's Secret Chemistry for Eco-Friendly Crop Protection
Researchers have uncovered the biochemical secrets of Hypocreales fungi, which form symbiotic relationships with plants to protect them from pests. By analyzing 82 fungal species, scientists identified over 5,000 gene groups responsible for producing natural compounds, with 80% being previously unknown. These fungi naturally produce chemicals that can act as biocontrol agents against pests, offering a greener alternative to synthetic pesticides. The study, published in Nature Chemical Biology, highlights the potential of these fungi to reduce reliance on harmful pesticides, which currently account for significant ecological damage and pest resistance.
