Japan's Taiyo Oil to Import Russian Sakhalin-2 Crude Amidst Geopolitical Tensions
Taiyo Oil, a Japanese refinery, is set to receive a shipment of crude oil from Russia's Sakhalin-2 project. This move comes as Japan seeks alternative oil sources due to disruptions in traditional supply routes caused by the ongoing U.S.-Israeli conflict with Iran. The Sakhalin-2 project, primarily a liquefied natural gas producer, is partially exempt from U.S. sanctions until June 18, allowing Japan to continue these imports. The shipment is expected to arrive in Ehime Prefecture, Japan, on May 4. This decision reflects Japan's broader strategy to diversify its energy sources, especially as the Strait of Hormuz remains largely inaccessible due to the conflict.
